Mark Wellman
Mark Wellman is a motivational speaker, filmmaker and outdoor adventurer and founder of No Limits, of Truckee, California. Having ascended over 50 peaks in the Sierra Nevada as well as many summits in the French Alps, Wellman encountered a disabling accident on a descent in the John Muir Wilderness in 1982, leaving him a paraplegic. In his struggle to get back on top both personally and in the great outdoors, ultimately he learned what is possible when you refuse to be held back.
With climbing partner Mike Corbett, in 1989, Wellman made history as the first paraplegic to ascend the 3,000 ft sheer granite face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, and in 1991, conquered Yosemite’s Half Dome (feats they would go back and do again on even tougher routes in 1999 and 2001, respectively). Wellman competed in two Paralympics and is known for extreme downhill skiing, endurance High Sierra winter trekking and whitewater kayaking adventures. From 1986-1991, Wellman worked as a full time Interpretive Ranger and as Director of the Disabled Access Program in Yosemite National Park. Utilizing material technologies and biomechanical concepts, he has developed equipment allowing the disabled to enjoy mountains, rivers, and trails. Wellman has produced films highlighting athletes with disabilities who are breaking barriers, and works extensively with our disabled veterans in programs of the DAV and PVA.
In 1996, Wellman awed Atlanta spectators with a 120 ft rope ascent with a flaming torch to light the Cauldron of the Paralympics. His autobiography, ‘Climbing Back’, is inspiring. Wellman’s determination to meet problems head-on and reach for the full potential motivates, whether communicated in writing, film, speaking or providing climbing seminars throughout the country. He speaks for Disabled Sports USA, lends his name to the Governor’s Committee on Employment for the Disabled. He has received numerous awards, such as The 1989 Senate Resolution, Arete Award, Timpany Center Award, American Red Cross Summit, National Athletic Awards and the FDR Award for Courage in Sports. With this dynamic style, Wellman has been an active advisor to the Jake™ program for over 6 years, encouraging its development first for our military in their critical job, with patience for return of technology of the Jake™ to empower “big outdoors” independence for the disabled community and our wounded soldiers.
